Online course on early modern Scottish palaeography

Learn how to read early Scottish records in a free three-week online course, Early Modern Scottish Palaeography: Reading Scotland’s Records, offered by the University of Glasgow. The course requires three hours of time each week.

During the three weeks, you will learn how to decipher handwritten manuscripts. You will also learn about the issues that affected the everyday lives of early modern men and women. Of particular importance will be the ‘kirk session’ — the church court which lay at the heart of local communities throughout this period.

Topics covered:

  • Learn to read and interpret early modern manuscripts.
  • Obtain specialist skills required to transcribe documents.
  • Develop an understanding of how historical research is conducted.
  • Knowledge of politics, religion and society in early modern Scotland.
  • Become familiar with extant records stored in Scottish archives.
  • Develop expertise in handling the kirk session records of the Church of Scotland.
