Genealogy resource: Archives Association of Ontario’s online publication

The summer 2017 issue of the Archives Association of Ontario’s (AAO) Off the Record is now available to members. Among the articles inside are pieces on recent exhibits at the Archives of Ontario and the Mennonite Archives of Ontario, a history of Waterloo’s Lady Aberdeen Collection, a new column from the Provincial Acquisition Strategy Working Group, and a memoir of being an archivist in 1974 by John Smart.

While past issues are available online to the public, current issues are available to AAO members only.

Past issues available to public
Last year’s summer issue is available for free online, and genealogists researching their ancestry in Ontario may discover resources in it. Included in the summer 2016 issue are articles about the revival of Lakehead University Archives, the Grey County Historic Community Mapping Project, and the history of the AAO.

The spring 2016 issue has the article, Maps of the Talbot Tract Digitization Project, about the Elgin County Archives digitization project. The article also includes a link to the online collection.

“Genealogists will find the (Talbot) plans a particularly rich resource, since most include personal land settlement information, with the names of grantees and dates of occupation penciled in by Talbot on individual lots. In many cases, Talbot treated the plans as working documents, adding, removing, overwriting and revising annotations, often over a period of several years… “

Off the Record is the official publication of the Archives Association of Ontario, featuring technical and professional advice, information about grants, special features on archives around Ontario, and information on educational and employment opportunities. It is a quarterly newsletter and has been published digitally since 2012.
