Learn how to add life to your ancestor’s story in family history writing series

Lynn Palermo, the Armchair Genealogist, is offering a free series of inspirational advice for genealogists who want to write about their family history. Called My Summer of Setting and Social History: Rebuilding Your Ancestor’s World, the series is expected to have four to six installments that will be sent to people who sign up to receive the free family history writing series by email.

“By giving great detail and description to the setting, we bring that world to life for the reader, drawing them deeper into a different place and time and making the ancestor’s life and the event we are recreating on the page come to life for the reader,” Lynn said.

The first email installment, sent last week, was about the setting and social history and how these elements can help flesh out your ancestor’s story.

Throughout the family history writing series, Lynn plans to share her excursions to her ancestors’ village of Stratford, Ontario and share how she uncovers the details and social history of her ancestors’ world in 1847.

During her research journey, she plans to consult local archives, historians, online resources, and take part in walking tours.

“The goal is to show family historians the resources available online and off that help you rebuild your ancestors world,” said Lynn.

The series will include writing exercises to help participants learn how to apply setting details to their stories.

Lynn is in the middle of research for a 25,000-word story she is writing for a certificate in creative writing from the University of Toronto.

If you are a member of the Storylines Newsletter for the Family History Writing Studio, then you automatically receive the series. If not, you can sign up for free here. For more information, you may contact Lynn through her website.
