Conservators offer expertise to help flood victims salvage photos and heirlooms

Do you have questions about what to do with your flood-damaged family treasures? The NCR Conservators for 2017 Flood Victims Facebook group wants to answer them – in English or French.

As of yesterday, more than 4,100 residences in Quebec had been affected by the floods and more than 3,000 people had had to leave their homes. It will likely take until the end of the month before the water recedes to normal levels.

A group of artifact conservators in the National Capital Region (Ottawa) created the Facebook group to help those affected by the flood in the greater Montreal area, Laval, Rigaud, and Gatineau, Quebec. The conservators want to offer their expertise and advice to help salvage family heirlooms, photos, documents, and treasures damaged by the flood waters.

One of the resources posted on the Facebook group is a series of Archives Society of Alberta’s how-to videos that demonstrate basic salvage techniques, such as handling and drying wet paper records and removing mould. You don’t need to join the group to access the resources, but you need to join to ask questions.
