From today until February 11, it is Saskatchewan Archives Week.
This annual event, first celebrated in 2006, helps kick off Heritage Month. Always held the first week of February, it also coincides with the birthday of Edmund H. Oliver, who was the first professor of history at the University of Saskatchewan, and, according to the Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists (SCAA), Professor Oliver is “arguably the father of archives in this province.”
SCAA said, “Archives Week fosters our identity and pride in our past with displays and special events. It elevates the role of our province’s archival institutions as keepers of authentic evidence of our past, keeping archives on our map.”
In Saskatchewan, there are more than 50 established archival institutions and several are hosting events this week, such as open houses, displays, and presentations.
One presentation that will interest genealogists is the one delivered by the City of Regina Archives, Picturing the Past: Treasures from the City of Regina Archives, at the Regina Public Library. It takes place Tuesday, February 7, at 7:00 p.m., at the Regina Public Library Central Branch, 2311 12th Avenue. Archives staff will introduce the city archives, reveal hidden treasures from the collection, and uncover the ways that you can access and use these treasures.
A list of events is available on the SCAA website.
