Add UBC’s online historical book collection to your genealogy toolbox

The University of British Columbia Library featured yesterday its online collection of more than 1,300 items in BC Historical Books that showcases the history of the province from 1783 to 1952.

If there is a chance your ancestors lived in British Columbia, you should add BC Historical Books to your genealogy research toolbox.

Early works in the collection include travelogues that tell tales of grand landscapes, meeting strangers, and surviving in the wilderness.

Quick searches of family surnames and locations on my family tree uncovered city directories, board of trade reports, histories, fraternal organization reports, and books about The Scotsman in Canada, Western Canada and The Scotsman in Canada, Eastern Canada.

When entering two keywords in the search box, such as the name of the city Prince George, add quotation marks (“Prince George”) to narrow down the results. To further narrow down the results by date and subject, adjust the filters in the left-hand margin.

This is the UBC Library feature, A Ramble in British Columbia, about the collection.
