Alberta Genealogical Society conference in April

Registration has opened for the Alberta Genealogical Society’s conference in Edmonton, from April 22 to 23. Held every two years, this is one of the biggest genealogy conferences in the country.

Called Ye Olde Genealogy Faire, this year’s medieval-themed event “promises to be an exciting fun-packed and informative conference.” Presentation topics include Canadian, British, and European genealogy, and DNA technology. A marketplace and pre-conference tours are among the other activities taking place.

The speakers are:
John H. Althouse
Lisa Alzo (via webinar)
Kyle J. Betit
Ruth Blair
Peter and Linda Darby
Susan Haga
Gena Philibert Ortega
John D. Reid
Gary Schroder
Diahan Southard
Dave Tyler

Diahan Southard will deliver the keynote address, How DNA Made a Family Out of Strangers, at the banquet on Saturday. During the Sunday morning keynote presentation, Kyle Betit will discuss the research behind the scenes of a Who Do You Think You Are? episode.

Banquet entertainment will be provided by the Red Stags performers — Lord and Lady Jaburek — a historical live action role play that uses high impact foam weapons with real armour. The entertainers are medieval re-enactors, who will involve the audience to reflect the time period 500 to 1400 A.D. Attendees are encouraged to dress in medieval attire for the conference and banquet, but it is not required.
