For the first time, the International Academy for Genealogy — Académie internationale de généalogie — will hold its conference in North America to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary and Montreal’s 375th. It will take place in Montreal, from June 19 to 23, 2017.
The theme of the 10th International Colloquium of Genealogy is Genealogy in the Americas — Pioneers and Families.
The first colloquium was held in Moscow in 1999.
More than 20 lectures have been scheduled so far for the Montreal event. With the exception of two that will be delivered in English, it appears all others will be in French.
Although most lectures will be about French-Canadian research, two of the presentations (one in English, one in French) will focus on Scottish migration to Canada. One of the speakers, Bruce Durie, will be coming from Edinburgh, Scotland.
This is a relatively small event, limited to 100 registrants, and it looks like they are quickly reaching their limit. At this point, it may just be interesting for many to see the list of topics and speakers.
The conference is being organized with three Quebec partners, the Commission franco-québécoise sur les lieux de mémoire communs, the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, and the Pointe-à-Callière Museum of Archaeology and History.
The Academy was founded in Turin, Italy in 1998. “Its goal is to encourage and co-ordinate genealogical studies at an international level, and to promote colloquiums and meetings on a world scale, in order to raise genealogy to the status of a true and worthy branch of the social sciences.”
