Savoir faire — California society creates no-cost way to thank volunteers

Genealogy societies often struggle with how to recognize the efforts of volunteers. You can find many ideas if you Google “volunteer recognition,” and some come with a cost.

The Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS), however, has an interesting, no-cost idea, called You Made My Day, that other societies may want to consider trying.

Here is how SCGS describes this volunteer recognition initiative in their blog.

Do you want to send special thanks to an SCGS volunteer who helped you find a missing ancestor? Do you want to recognize an especially hard-working volunteer staff member for their continuing service?

It’s easy! Fill out a You Made My Day card, located in the entrance foyer of the SCGS Library. Write a note on the back of the card telling us a little about your experience. You can sign your name or choose to remain anonymous.

Please include the name or a description of the person who made your day.

You can drop the card off at the librarian’s desk, slip it into the wooden You Made My Day box in the foyer, or mail it to the SCGS Library after your visit. Help us thank our volunteers. And Thank YOU for taking the time to give our volunteers some well-deserved recognition.

Kudos to the Southern California Genealogical Society for thinking about their volunteers.
