Timeline of Montreal neighbourhood, Griffintown

If your ancestors lived in Griffintown, you may be interested in the timeline the Montreal Gazette published Saturday as part of its series about the transformation of the Montreal working-class neighbourhood.

Griffintown, the “industrial birthplace of Canada,” was home to many Irish immigrants and their descendants. The name Griffintown was derived from Mary Griffin, who illegally obtained the lease to the land in 1799. In early census records, it was known as the ward of St. Ann.

The Gazette‘s Griffintown timeline is available here.
