British Home Child Group International has launched a new website. Designed by British Home Child descendant Mike Quakenbush, the website is fresh looking and easy to navigate.
The Home page features stories about British Home Children (BHC), events where I assume presentations and information about BHC will be delivered, and Facebook comments.
The website features sections, About, Resources, Research, Blog, Newsletter, Contact, and Your Story.
In the About section, you will find the history of the British Home Child (BHC): “From the early 1860s up to the 1970s, children who were institutionalized in ‘Homes’ across the UK, were sent, to countries across the British Empire to be used as indentured farm workers and domestics. The majority of the up to 120,000 British Home children sent to Canada, arrived between 1869 and 1939. Mostly, they ranged in age from four to fifteen. …”
The Resources section includes Databases, Sending Agencies and Organization, Ships, Roll of Honour, and Links to online resources.
As a webmaster, I like how all the contact info — email and social media — are easy to find at the top right of the home page.
Well done, Mr. Quankenbush and British Home Child Group International.
Visit the website here.
Thanks for this info – I’m stuck on my grandfather Frederick Quackenbush, who was supposedly an orphan from NY, born about 1881, give or take a couple of years, depending on what story or source is used. This “British Home Child” site has given me another avenue to pursue, one I never considered before.
Regina, your surname is registered with The Surname Society see the society website at http://surname-society.org and just search for your name using the search box top right. I am sure the researcher of all occurrences of your surname will help you with your research if he can.
