My upcoming OGS Ottawa lecture on using social media for genealogy research

Join me at the Ontario Genealogical Society Ottawa Branch‘s meeting Saturday afternoon, October 28, when I will deliver the Ryan Taylor/ J. Brian Gilchrist Memorial Lecture on how to use social media for genealogy research. I am very honoured to speak at an event named after two great Canadian genealogists.

Ontario Genealogical Society

21st Century Genealogy: Taking Advantage of Social Media for Your Research
Imagine there are genealogists around you 24/7, sharing resources, advising you, and perhaps learning from you as well. That’s social media. During the lecture, I will focus on how genealogists can benefit from following top social media, such as Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Facebook, and blogs. I will explain how to use social media, find the best resources, maximize your time, and connect with genealogists around the world.

Leery about the topic?
Believe it or not, I originally prepared this lecture for genealogists who don’t like social media — as well as those who want to learn more about it.

It may seem odd to deliver a presentation to an audience who may not be keen about the topic, but several years ago, I was one of those who thought social media was a waste of time. Like a lot of genealogists, I figured it was just about pictures of cats and what people ate for dinner.

Then, I discovered how social media could make me a better genealogist. And I want to share with you how I use it.

So, if you have time next Saturday afternoon, drop by. If you do, please tap me on the shoulder and say, “Hi.” I would love to meet you.

The meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m. for a bit of networking, coffee, tea, and cookies, followed by my presentation at 1:30 p.m. Free admission. You’ve got to love genealogy — free refreshments and presentation, and an opportunity to meet people who share our passion. Hard to beat.

The networking and lecture will take place in Room 115, right inside the door on the main floor at the City of Ottawa Archives, 100 Tallwood Drive.
