When you look at the new online tool from Little Lake Cemetery, the City of Peterborough, Ontario, and Fleming College that provides key information about burial sites, you will want other cemeteries to offer the same ability to research.
The new interactive web mapping tool — or app, developed with the assistance of students at Fleming College, allows users to search for a grave by surname or date, and see information and a photo of the grave marker. One of the filters along the bottom even allows users to filter by date range.
Little Lake Cemetery, which first opened in 1850, has about 5,500 grave markers.
The cemetery app, however, does not provide every detail genealogists want to know. So far, it appears to only provide information inscribed on the grave marker, with no additional information that may perhaps be available in the cemetery record. For example, if the headstone only has a surname on it, that is all you will find, in addition to the location and a photo. There will be no first name or date of death. Still, for many of us, the information and photos provided for Little Lake Cemetery are more than we have now for many of our ancestors.
On its website, the cemetery says, “It is recognized that this is not a complete record of interments at the cemetery, but is limited in scope to the task assigned to the students at time of the project.
“It is the hope of the City of Peterborough and Little Lake Cemetery that future projects will be able to expand and enhance this valuable history tool, building towards a more encompassing historical record of the residents interred and the commemorative artifacts that reside at the cemetery.
