Former Librarian and Archivist of Canada Ian. E. Wilson has been promoted to Officer of the Order of Canada for “his sustained leadership in the development and accessibility of public archives, and for his published works on history, heritage and information management.”
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, yesterday announced 83 new appointments to the Order of Canada. The new member list includes five Companions, 21 Officers, including one Honorary Officer, and 57 Members.
Mr. Wilson began his career at Queen’s University Archives in 1967, later becoming Saskatchewan’s Provincial Archivist and Chairman of the Saskatchewan Heritage Advisory Board. He was appointed Archivist of Ontario in 1986, a position he held until 1999. He was named National Archivist in July 1999.
With Roch Carrier, the then National Librarian, Mr. Wilson developed and led the process to link the National Archives and National Library as a unified institution in 2004.
The Order of Canada recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
