If your Irish ancestors settled in Canada and you have tested your DNA and uploaded it to the free site, GEDmatch.com, there’s a new Facebook group for you, called Irish in Canada – Gedmatch Numbers.
This group is also good for Irish-Canadian genealogists who want to learn about the free GEDmatch site and understand why they should upload their DNA results there. The more people upload their results to GEDmatch, the better.
The Facebook group was created by Albertan Patricia Greber. Soon after, MaryAnne Bannon Robertson from Ontario offered to help her administer it.
Ms. Greber explained how the group works. “If I match a GEDmatch number with someone who also has Irish ancestors in Canada, maybe it will be a clue to take the research a little further. It is also an indication that your match is actively researching, and you may be more likely to receive a response.”
While the group is still relatively small, they have already created a long list of ancestral surnames and GEDmatch numbers.
Ms. Robertson said, “Working together, we each hold a piece of the puzzle which builds the bigger picture and leads to the result we all seek.”
For those who have not yet uploaded their DNA raw data to GEDmatch, members of the group will provide guidance and explain the benefits of doing so. The video, GEDMatch Basics, on YouTube is a good starter.
Irish in Canada – Gedmatch Numbers is a private Facebook group. You must ask to join. It is only for DNA for genealogy. Non DNA-related posts may be removed.
