Screen capture of a video shows a small part of the damage caused by vandals in Quebec City’s Cemetière Saint-Charles.
The vandalism took place in the section of the cemetery between rue Saint-Vallier and the Saint-Charles River.
The cemetery has been contacting family members, and local police are investigating.
Saint-Charles Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery where several premiers, mayors, and well-known artists are buried. The first burial took place there in 1855. It was the second cemetery-garden to be built in Quebec City, after the Protestant cemetery, Mount Hermon, in 1848. The cemetery design by architect Charles Baillargé was inspired by 18th-century gardens in France. After the Plains of Abraham, it is the city’s second largest green space.
