Saguenay historical society wants to become biggest industrial archival centre in Canada

The historical society in Saguenay, Quebec, the Société historique de Saguenay, wants to become the biggest industrial archival centre in Canada by acquiring the archives from major companies that helped build the region, such as Alcan, now Rio Tinto, and Résolu.

According to the Journal de Québec newspaper, the society already maintains more than 1,200 boxes of archives from Price Brothers, Unifor, and the Arvida employees’ union.

An agreement in principle has been reached with Résolu.

Since Rio Tinto plans to move its headquarters in Montreal to a new location in the city in 2016, society president Laurent Thibeault wants to take advantage of the move and ask that the corporate archives be repatriated to the region where much of Alcan’s production took place.

Thanks to the Fédération des sociétés d’histoire du Québec for bringing this to my attention on Facebook.
