New list of Canadian online resources

I like lists of genealogy resources. Even though they may include resources I have already visited, these lists remind me about resources I may have forgotten and tell me about new ones. That is why I was pleased to read that blogger Jo Henn has created new resource pages on her blog, Climbing My Family Tree. Her resource pages include lengthy lists for the US, United Kingdom, Ireland — and Canada.

Ms. Henn writes: “My Resources: Canada page has over 80 links to helpful websites, several of which, again, are portals to hundreds of online databases containing thousands of records. I’ve organized them under the following categories: General (covers the whole country), History, United Empire Loyalists, Immigration/Emigration, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario / Upper Canada, Quebec / Lower Canada, Newspapers, and Books.”

My suggestion
If I may, I would suggest Ms. Henn include one of my favourite Quebec resources, Lovell’s Montreal Directories, on the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec website. I probably consult this resource every week. Don’t feel daunted by the French-language interface. Simply click on Série principal (1842-1977) in the left-hand column under Montréal, and you will discover the rest is in English.

Read Ms. Hann’s blog post, My New Resources Pages Are Up!, to see the lists of resources. If you have suggestions, I bet she would be interested to hear from you.

  1. I also suggested to Jo that she consider adding out Missisquoi County Rootsweb Blog to your Quebec list next year. We have transcribed 10s of thousands of area census, notary, directories and parish registered and made them all freely available and searchable over the past past 10 years http://missisquoigenealogy.blogspot.com/

Thanks so much for the post about my resource pages, Gail!

If anyone visits the blog any day, the resource pages are tabbed at the top. Click on the one that interests you to be taken to the list of resources. It’s not just a once a year list. I’ll update it quarterly normally, but will add really good resources when I find out about them as long as my life cooperates. I’ve added the Lovell’s Montreal Directories per your suggestion, after taking a look at them. They are a great resource (I love city directories). I’ve also added the Missisquoi County Rootsweb Blog per Nancy Cunningham’s suggestion. I poked around their website/blog a bit. They’ve done an impressive amount of work and those are very useful records.

I hope we Canadians will keep you busy with our suggestions, Jo. Thanks for creating the list. I’ll be writing a post later this week about another terrific resource.

I just began family research in New Brunswick, Canada! How timely…many thanks for sharing.

  4. Hi, Gail,

I just wanted to let you know that your post (as well as Jo’s) is highlighted on my “Friday Finds and Follows” post at my genealogy blog, AnceStories: The Stories of My Ancestors.
