War of 1812 monument unveiled on Parliament Hill

The War of 1812 monument was officially unveiled yesterday on Parliament Hill at a ceremony that marked the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Malcolm’s Mills, the final battle of the war to take place on Canadian soil. Heritage Minister Shelly Glover hosted the ceremony.

The monument features seven bronze figures, each about two metres tall. The Ottawa Citizen reports, “It is located in front of Parliament Hill’s East Block, and purposely faces the National War Memorial.”

Malcolm’s Mills is near Scotland, Ontario, southwest of Brantford.

As for the outcome of that last battle, the Canadians lost despite putting up a “spirited resistance” against the Americans. But we won the war.
