Want to see a newspaper on Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank? Try submitting a request

Do you know that you can suggest newspapers for Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank to consider adding to their online collections? I didn’t know this until I read Marian B. Wood’s blog post, Ask for a Newspaper to Be Added to Database.

In the case of Newspapers.com, you need to go to the Contact page and select Newspaper addition request in the subject line. The process is similar for GenealogyBank, which only carries American newspapers. Just go to their Contact Us link and select Feedback.

Before submitting a request, I recommend doing some legwork to find out who holds the newspaper archives. My thinking is the more info you provide to these companies, the greater the chance they’ll pursue your suggestion.

I looked for the custodian of the archives of a small town newspaper that interests me.

I asked the archivist if they have already microfilmed or digitized the newspaper and which period of time their collection covered. Much to my delight, I received an almost immediate reply. She even offered to look up articles for me.

Now, I plan to contact a library in Northern Ontario that holds the microfilm of a newspaper that interests me there.

Sales
A six-month subscription to Newspapers.com is now CDN$59.99 ($44.90 in the US) — 40 percent off the regular price of CDN$99.99. I received an email that indicated the sale ends December 7 at 11:59 p.m. Mountain time. (The web page says November 23, but it’s likely wrong and hasn’t been updated.)

Genealogybank also has a sale. A one-year subscription is US$55.95 (about CDN$78) — 44 percent off the regular price of US$99.90 (about CDN$140).
