There are two free virtual presentations on Monday and Tuesday this week with topics we perhaps see less often. They will especially interest those with Indigenous ancestry in Quebec and relatives who lived in Newfoundland and Labrador.
On Monday, September 22, the Québec Genealogical eSociety will host the presentation, How to conduct Indigenous genealogical research in Quebec, presented by Jenna Lemay, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.
This presentation will teach you the basics of researching Indigenous ancestors in Quebec. Some common problems will be discussed along with tips for how to deal with these issues. A case study of a Quebec Indigenous family will be used to illustrate these methods.
Jenna Lemay has been involved in genealogical research for over 10 years and has been working in the Archives and Public History sector for almost as long. Working in the archives of a former Residential School and living on traditional Anishinaabe territory in Northern Ontario, she specializes in First Nations and Métis ancestry research. Jenna has worked with many clients to help them understand whether they have Indigenous ancestry and whether they are eligible for Indigenous status under the Canadian Federal government. Register to watch online.
On Tuesday, September 23, the Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador will host a virtual presentation, NLPL Genealogy Resources, by Rachel Head, the Newfoundland and Labrador Collections and Services Librarian with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries (NLPL). The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. Newfoundland time (6:00 p.m. Eastern time).
Rachel grew up on the west coast of Newfoundland, an experience that shaped her deep appreciation for the province’s communities and history. Since joining NLPL in 2023, she has held several roles, and in her current role, she works with NLPL’s Reference Team, helping patrons and researchers find answers to their questions. Rachel will share how NLPL’s archival materials can support genealogy research — no matter where you are in your search.
There is no registration required. Just click on the link for this Zoom presentation on the society’s Public Lectures page as early as 30 minutes ahead of time.
