The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is looking for volunteers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario to help ensure headstones of the men and women who died in the World Wars will be preserved.
Later this month, they’ll also need volunteers in other parts of Ontario, including Toronto.
In North America, CWGC cares for more than 18,000 commemorations on graves and memorials of men and women who died in the World Wars.
What are the primary tasks for a volunteer?
- Visit your assigned cemeteries at least twice during the summer months and document the condition of the headstones using a Smartphone app.
- Take photographs of each headstone that you visit.
- If necessary, clean the headstone, using CWGC’s approved methods, and perform light clearing and weeding around the gravestone to maintain access.
