Poppies in a Field of Stones by Jan Briggs-McGowan
Over the past decade, Jan Briggs-McGown has been inspired to create a lasting recognition of Canada’s veterans with the Poppy Rocks project. In recent years she has arranged for the creation and placement of more than 700 stones painted with poppies and placed on the graves of veterans in the Bruce County region. Last November, a group of grade 6 students in Kemptville painted their own poppy rocks for placement at the local cenotaph. Jan is hoping to inspire us in Leeds & Grenville to build on this initiative and ensure that we pass on the act of remembrance to younger generations. Register to watch online here.
Tuesday, May 7, 7:30 p.m. — Durham Region Branch
Following the Trails of the Betts Bibles by Beth Adams
It took close to 30 years to follow the trail from a Betts family bible in Pickering to an older one in California, that led back to family roots in Colonial Connecticut. Beth Adams got hooked on genealogy when her Aunt Charlotte took her and her mother to visit the Betts House, an old stone home that her 2x great grandfather had helped to build on Westney Rd. in Pickering.
The house was fantastic — but the family bible her cousin Myra got out to show them was the clincher! Inside that bible was a typewritten transcript of the family pages from an even older bible! And there was another house at the end of the search! This is a hybrid presentation. Attend in person at the Branch library on the 3rd floor at Northminster United Church, 676 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa, or register to watch online.
