Ontario Ancestors webinars this week — Swiss-German, French Canadian and Irish Palatine research, and the Sudbury Library’s collections

This week, Ontario Ancestors’ branches and a special interest group will hold three virtual meetings and the first session of a two-part series on French Canadian research. All are open to the public, but require registration. The virtual meetings are free, but there’s a fee for the French Canadian series.

Times are in Eastern time.

Monday, September 19, 7:00 p.m. — Oxford County Branch
Punkeydoodles Corner by Alayne Kleser

Punkeydoodle’s Corner is a small hamlet with many claims to fame, not the least of which is its location at the intersection of Oxford, Perth and Waterloo County. Over the years, the name has been a constant source of interest, with articles being written by newspapers and journals across the country, including National Geographic. In the end, the origin of the name remains wrapped in mystery. Or does it? Taking a look at four of the stories behind the name, Alayne went back to look at the people living in the community in the early years. Journey with her, as we learn about the Swiss-German community surrounding Punkeydoodle’s Corner, in the hopes of learning the truth behind the community’s name. Registration is required.

Tuesday, September 20, 7:00 p.m. — Sudbury District Branch
Library Resources: What’s old is new again by Kristen Bertrand

This presentation by Kristen Bertrand, the local history librarian at the Greater Sudbury Public Library, is about the collections and projects at the Sudbury Local History Department. Registration is required.

Thursday, September 22, 7:30 p.m. — Toronto Branch
French Canadian Research, Part 1 by Johanne Gervais

In this two-part series, we will look at French Canadian research, highlighting the use of the 1666 Census in part one, and use the Quebec Genealogical eSociety resources BMS2000 and Genealogy Quebec to look for ancestors who may have migrated to Ontario in part two on September 29.

Each session will consist of a presentation and an opportunity to ask questions. The lectures will be recorded, so that registrants who can’t attend the live presentations may watch at a more convenient time.

Registration is required. $15 for OGS members and $20 for non-members. Learn more on the Toronto Branch’s website.

Saturday, September 24, 2:00 p.m. — Irish Palatine Special Interest Group
The Irish Palatines – New Perspectives by Claire McCormick
