Early 19th-century Scottish assessment roll now available on Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives’ website

If some of your ancestors lived in Aberdeenshire, Scotland as my Youngs and Fyvies did, the recent addition of a 19th-century assessment roll for the town of Peterhead to Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives‘ website may interest you.

The 30-page transcribed index was originally compiled for the Police Commissioners in 1820-1821.

Entries include a dancing master, several hairdressers and a musician. The most common entry is seaman. There are also entries for local companies, including the Herring Fishing Company, the Whale Fishing Company, and Gordon Barron & Company.

The original document can be viewed at Old Aberdeen House.

As for my ancestors, I did find one Fyvie and a few Youngs on the roll, but I’m not sure they’re mine.
