Civil registration of deaths in Nova Scotia began in 1864, continued to 1877, then lapsed until 1908, when the province resumed record-keeping. Since October 1, 1908 the records have been maintained without interruption.
The death records for 1971 complete the province’s annual release of vital records for this year that included marriages for 1946 and births for 1920.
You can search for births, marriages and deaths registered prior to this year’s releases on the Nova Scotia Archives’ website. Once this year’s releases have been transcribed, they’ll become part of the online vital statistics search feature.
