The Canadian Research Knowledge Network yesterday shared on social media that they ended the year of Canadiana features with the most viewed item in their collection being The Toronto World newspaper.
Founded in 1880, The Toronto World was a daily morning newspaper based in Toronto, Ontario that was published until 1921, with a Sunday edition that operated from 1891 to 1924. It covered local and international news, along with sports.
According to an entry in Wikipedia, The Toronto World “was popular among Toronto’s working class. It was said to be the ‘editorially boldest’ of the Toronto press, and was notable for its irreverence, noisy exposés of civic corruption, skillful skirting of the libel laws, and opposition to the religious establishment.”
The newspaper ceased publication in 1921 and all assets were sold to The Mail and Empire newspaper.
