Nova Scotia Archives last week added a new photographic collection to its website that contains 9,300 digitized images.
This is a must-view collection for any family historian whose relatives lived in the province.
The photos were collected by the provincial archives from its opening in the 1930s until the 1970s, with many of the online photos pre-dating that period.
There are 18 categories, such as agriculture, people, army, navy, places, and clippings, in the navigation menu, and the photos can be searched by keyword. In the people category, there are more than 2,000 images, most of them portraits.

but take note that in an image where names appear beneath a military photo, the names
are not included in the description of the image. As a result, the names of the men in the photo above will not appear in the search results.

The almost 1,000 Notman Studio photos in the collection cover the period ca. 1869 to ca. 1920, and include photo portraits, Halifax streets, buildings and general views, and similar landscapes from several other Nova Scotia communities.
The photographic collection is the latest section to be added to Nova Scotia Archives’ virtual archives and databases on its website.
