40,000+ photos of military headstones and cemeteries on New Zealand War Graves Trust website

New Zealander Dennis Kerins wanted to photograph all war graves and primary memorials of New Zealanders who died in conflicts overseas and create a digital archive so biographical information and images are available online.

With the help of fellow New Zealand War Graves Trust trustee Derrick Bunn, he has now gathered over 40,000 images of headstones and cemeteries.

More than 32,900 New Zealanders are buried across 93 Commonwealth War Grave cemeteries and public cemeteries, or commemorated on memorials worldwide. Of these, 3,484 war dead are in New Zealand.

Photographs, research and data span back to the Anglo-Boer War in 1899 to the present day and in peacekeeping operations are available on the New Zealand War Graves Project website.

More on the project can be found in the Waikato Times article, A wish to see fiance’s overseas war grave sparked a mission to document every one.
