Nova Scotia Archives releases 1970 death records

Nova Scotia Archives yesterday announced that the 1970 death records are now available to transcribe, and they can also be searched by last name and browsed.

The 1970 death records have been indexed, including first and last name and date and place of death.

The fields to be transcribed include date and place of birth, occupation, spouse’s name, parents’ names, date and place of burial, and cause of death.

You can transcribe one, two, or many records. It’s easy to do. Registration is not required.

Civil registration of deaths in Nova Scotia began in 1864, continued to 1877, then lapsed until 1908, when the province resumed recordkeeping. Since October 1, 1908 the records have been maintained without interruption.

Transcription of the 1945 marriage records, which began at the end of April, has been completed and will be released after the provincial archives finishes “some loose ends.”

Once the death records are transcribed, we will likely see the 1920 birth records available for transcription.

Civil birth, marriage and death registrations can be searched on the Nova Scotia Archives website.
