Much patience required when ordering WWII service files from Library and Archives Canada

If you’ve been thinking about ordering a relative’s Second World War service file from Library and Archives Canada, you may want to do so as soon as possible.

I ordered a file three weeks ago.

Yesterday, in response to my order, LAC sent me an email to advise they have just started handling inquiries received in August 2018 — two years and three months ago.

They said, “Due to the high volume of urgent requests, priority service will be given to requests where documentation is required for medical or employment purposes, bursaries, benefits and services, which clearly demonstrate an urgency or deadline.”

I suspect the lengthy delay is for all non-urgent requests for most, if not all, documents, not just for military records.
