The Québec Genealogical eSociety will host the free webinar, The Forgotten in Genealogy — Clergenealogy, presented by André Morel, tonight, September 29, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
Some researchers estimate that more than 120,000 young women and men in French North America have dedicated their lives to religious service from the beginning of New France to present day.
The birth of these people is for the most part recorded in baptism records. However, anyone trying to follow the lives of these children to build their family tree often loses track of them. One reason is because their religious commitment usually involves a name change. Information about their deaths can also be difficult to find since religious communities sometimes have their own cemeteries and registers.
The Société de généalogie Saint-Hubert took on the mammoth task of identifying members of regular and secular clergy of French-speaking North America to connect them to their families. So far, the society has linked 56,784 nuns, brothers, fathers and priests to their parents.
