Tracking the Irish famine migrants to Canada

The Embassy of Ireland in Ottawa will present a livestreamed public lecture, In Search of the 1490: Tracking the Famine Migrants from Strokestown to Canada in 1847, by Professor Mark McGowan from the University of Toronto and University of St. Michael’s College on the embassy’s YouTube channel on Thursday, October 1, at 7:00 p.m.

Prof. McGowan leads the search for the 1,490 Strokestown Famine emigrants and their descendants in North America.

He and and his research teams have compiled the list of the 1,490 Strokestown Famine emigrants and mapped their places of settlement in Canada and the United States. They have also traced the children who were left orphans from the 1,490 Famine emigrants and located where many of them were adopted by French-Canadian families.
