The Prince Edward Island Public Archives and Records Office reopened to the public on Monday at its new location, the Atlantic Technology Centre (ATC), 176 Great George Street in Charlottetown.
The provincial archives is taking several COVID-19 precautions.
All visitors are asked a series of health questions before they are admitted access to the archives.
Researchers are asked to respect physical distancing and proper hand hygiene guidelines during their visit. A limit of five researchers are permitted in the reading room at one time.
Researchers are asked to book an appointment in advance of their visit. Limited walk-in bookings maybe available on a first come, first served basis. Call 902-368-4290 or email archives@gov.pe.ca to book an appointment.
The provincial archives had closed its doors at the nearby historic Coles Building on November 1 to prepare for its move to the more modern ATC.
During the move, staff were unable to provide reference services. Reference inquiries sent during the closure were not saved.
When the announcement about the move was first made, archivist Jill MacMicken-Wilson told CBC its location, the Coles Building, was “bursting at the seams.”
Last year, the provincial archives uploaded the index of thousands of death registrations, from 1965 to 1968. No word yet on whether they plan to upload more death registrations or marriage records.
There will be no Prince Edward Island birth registrations online until at least 2026. These records are restricted for 120 years after the birth, and civil registration didn’t begin until 1906.
