Findmypast adds 19th-century Prince Edward Island directories and almanacs

Findmypast has added a new Canadian record collection, with promises of adding more from across the country over the coming months, raising hopes among those who research their Canadian ancestry.

On Friday, Findmypast announced it had added Prince Edward Island directories and almanacs, from 1880 to 1899.

Findmypast describes the new collection as an “eclectic mix of five directories (that) cover the late 19th century from 1880 to 1899.”

The titles are:

  • Frederick’s Prince Edward Island Directory, 1989-1890
  • McMillan’s Agricultural and Nautical Almanac, 1881-1899
  • McMillan’s Almanac, 1896-1899
  • Teare’s Directory & Hand Book Of The Province of Prince Edward Island, 1880
  • The Prince Edward Island Almanac, 1899

McMillan’s Agricultural and Nautical Almanacs provide lists of a number of less common finds, such as members of societies and associations, businesses, politicians, and postmasters.

McMillan’s Agricultural and Nautical Almanac, 1890, along with 1884, 1885, and 1887, can be searched and browsed for free on Canadiana. The 1880, 1886, and 1888 editions can be searched on Internet Archive.

The Frederick’s Prince Edward Island Directory, 1989-90, is also available to search for free on Internet Archive.

To find a number of the directories and almanacs for free online, Google “mcmillan’s agricultural and nautical almanac” “canadiana” or Google “mcmillan’s agricultural and nautical almanac” “internet archive”. Conduct similar searches for the other titles.

Although most of these directories and almanacs are available for free online, you must search them one publication at a time. A global search of all the Prince Edward Island publications on Findmypast simplifies the search process.

Here’s hoping by the end of this year we see that Findmypast added Canadian record collections at a frequent pace.
