Prince Edward Island Archives closes for move to new location

Work to relocate the Prince Edward Island Public Archives and Records Office two blocks away to the Atlantic Technology Centre has begun.

On November 1, at the end of the day, the provincial archives closed for several weeks. The staff will be unable to provide reference services during the move. Reference inquiries sent during the closure will not be saved.

The archives have been housed for 37 years in the almost 150-year-old Coles Building in Charlottetown.

When the announcement about the move was made in March, archivist Jill MacMicken-Wilson told CBC the Coles Building was “bursting at the seams.”

Provincial officials said the Atlantic Technology Centre will allow for a larger public service area for clients.

People on Facebook, however, raised concerns about the move, saying it will be difficult to find parking near the new location.

Updates about the move and the re-opening will be posted on the PEI Library and Archives website.

More on the move can be found in the CBC report, ‘Bursting at the seams’: P.E.I. archives begin move to Atlantic Technology Centre.
