Historic New Brunswick Anglican church records soon to go online

Anticipation has been growing since last fall when the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Genealogical Society (NBGS) revealed they are working together to digitize more than 700 registers from the Anglican Diocese of Fredericton. The registers contain baptism, marriage, and burial records from across the province, dating back to the 1780s.

NBGS volunteers are transcribing the records that will be searchable on the society’s and the provincial archives’ websites.

So far, the volunteers have completed the transcriptions of 49 registers, with another 62 in progress, representing about 50,000 records and almost 120,000 names.

According to Dave Laskey, the project manager at NBGS, the database will adhere to the provincial archives’ privacy guidelines, and for that reason information on some people will not be made available until a much later date, even years from now.

While the original plan was to start uploading the first of the church records as early as February, the society decided to wait until a “critical mass of records” has been transcribed before putting them online.

The good news is NBGS is rapidly approaching the point of being ready to upload the first set of transcribed records.
