Thanks to funding from the Ottawa Branch of Ontario Ancestors, known until a week ago as the Ontario Genealogical Society, the Arnprior & McNab/Braeside Archives has made available on its website brief summaries of birth and marriage announcements, obituaries, and death notices, from about 1888 to 1934, with links in many cases to the digitized page of the local newspaper where they were originally published.
Arnprior is located in Renfrew County, less than an hour’s drive west of Ottawa.
The summaries, or abstracts, come from a variety of newspapers, with the Arnprior Chronicle being the most prevalent. All of the titles of digitized newspapers are listed in the finding aid.
Search the birth, marriage, death index for an abstract. If a digitized image is available, a link to the newspaper page will appear.
If a search of a first and last name is unsuccessful, search by last name only. In many cases, only an initial is provided for the first name.
While on the website, take the time to do a global search of an ancestor’s last name. A search of Smith, for example, uncovered 63 records yesterday, most of them photos.
What does not appear to be part of the global search of the site is the new birth, marriage, and death index with links to newspapers. So, check both sections for family surnames.
Wow, this is amazing. I’ve already found obituaries for my great grandparents. Learned that my 2x great grandmother died on board the ship from Ireland and was buried at sea. I suspected this might be the case but it’s great to get co formation. Thank you so much for sharing this. Much appreciated.
It sounds like you hit the jackpot with this collection!
