Long-term agreement to preserve Francophone documentary heritage in Saskatchewan

As part of Saskatchewan’s Archives Week 2019 that ended yesterday, the Société historique de la Saskatchewan and the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan have signed a long-term collaboration agreement for the development of French-language archival services in the province.

In 2014, the Société historique de la Saskatchewan and the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan began a dialogue in order to build a partnership around a common vision. Since then, the two organizations have collaborated fully on projects such as research for the documentary on the heritage of Fransaskois organizations in 2016, the Association jeunesse fransaskoise photographic processing project in 2017 and 2018, and the Des Prairies aux Tranchées / From the Prairies to the Trenches video project with Radio Canada Saskatchewan in 2018.

Present for several centuries in the Prairies and Saskatchewan, Francophone heritage is very often represented by documents in French created by many families and municipalities of the province. To ensure the preservation and transmission of that heritage, the two organizations want to develop an archival service in French for the benefit of the Francophone and Francophile population of Saskatchewan.

The collaborative agreement is designed to:

  • Develop services in French in the archives sector;
  • Promote the exchange of bilingual expertise;
  • Strengthen bilingual initiatives in archival training;
  • Strengthen bilingualism in the delivery of information and in future projects.
