This must be back-to-school week for genealogists because there is a number of free webinars that are bound to make us smarter. I’ll write about some of them today and others in the next couple of days.
Already, there are three free webinars Tuesday night.
Tuesday, August 21, 8:00 p.m. ET
The Wisconsin State Genealogical Society will host a free webinar, Citing Sources and Evaluating Evidence, presented by Thomas MacEntee, on Tuesday, August 21, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
You’ll learn how to use the source citation templates, evidence evaluation features, as well as how to add/remove features to create a customized research log of your own. A good deal of time will be spent on citing sources and resources to make the process easier. In addition, we’ll cover how to look at a record and evaluate the evidence to determine if it proves or disproves the proof point. Finally, you’ll see how you can add new source citation templates, add new columns and more.
Register here to watch the live webinar. The recording will be available afterward for society members only.

Tuesday, August 21, 8:00 p.m. ET + free recording
At the same time as the Wisconsin webinar — Tuesday, August 21, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time — Legacy Family Tree will host a webinar, GPS: Finding Your Way Through Tough Research Problems, presented by James Ison.
Life is good when records with direct evidence exist. Typically that doesn’t last long. At some point, one finds only bits and pieces of indirect or conflicting evidence and progress often comes to a screeching halt. This class examines a case study prepared for application to the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) where direct evidence was non-existent in identifying the family of Jesse Roberts of Greenville County, South Carolina. Key strategies are presented to piece together strands and threads of evidence from disparate sources using the Genealogical Proof Standard.
Register here to watch the live webinar. In the case of the Legacy Family Tree webinar, a recording will likely be available to watch for free for up to seven days.

Tuesday, August 21, 9:00 p.m. ET
The Utah Genealogical Association DNA special interest group will host a free webinar, Obtaining and Using mtDNA and Y-DNA Evidence, presented by by Blaine Bettinger, on Tuesday, August 21, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.
Most genealogists are familiar with autosomal DNA. However, other types of DNA testing such as mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y-DNA can provide useful evidence that can be incorporated into genealogical conclusions. In Obtaining and Using mtDNA and Y-DNA Evidence, Dr. Bettinger will discuss how to obtain mtDNA and Y-DNA evidence, and how to incorporate it into your research.
