WWI Canadian soldiers’ memoirs, regimental histories

On his website, Doing Our Bit, about Canadians in the First World War, British Columbia-based researcher, genealogist and blogger Steve Clifford yesterday launched a First World War Canadian Soldier Memoirs page that provides links to digitized books written by soldiers about their experience in WWI. It also includes links to a number of publications containing honour rolls and lists.

The majority of the links point to resources on Internet Archive and the Canadian Military History website, created by the University of Calgary and the Military Museums of Calgary. Mr. Clifford also lists links to resources available on Project Gutenberg, Early Canadiana Online, and Library and Archives Canada.

Doing Our Bit began as a tribute to members of Mr. Clifford’s family who served in the First World War, and soon afterward he began adopting soldiers whose letters and photos found their way to him.

Regimental histories
About a week prior to publishing the Soldiers Memoirs page, Mr. Clifford created another new web page, Canadian First World War Regimental Histories. This page provides links to nearly 60 digitized books. Included in the online collection are The 1st Canadian Division in the battles of 1918Records of the Fourth Canadian Infantry Battalion in the great war, 1914-19188th Canadian Field Ambulance photograph album, and Cape Breton Highlanders 185th Overseas Battalion.

Family historians eager to learn what their Canadian military ancestors may have experienced during WWI will find an abundance of useful resources in the drop-down menu item, called Research, at the top of every page. The other menu items are also worth a look.
