In yesterday’s OGS eWeekly Update, David Thompson, director at the Ontario Genealogical Society, reminded everyone that the entire run of Canadian Genealogist magazine is available on the society’s website to members and non-members.
All 38 quarterly issues of Canadian Genealogist, published from 1979 to 1988, can be downloaded for free.

Mr. Thompson wrote in the OGS online newsletter, “(Canadian Genealogist) marked a serious attempt by editors George and Elizabeth Hancocks to find Canadian genealogical data from elsewhere than central Canada, where the Ontario Genealogical Society was making major strides in finding and publishing family history material. The editors of CG made it their business to visit locations throughout Canada and the northern United States, and to seek out genealogists and family historians wherever they went.”
Alberta-based genealogist Patricia Greber found several articles in Canadian Genealogist that are still relevant today and helpful in her research. She said, “One article referred to books about the Irish in Canada — The Luck of the Irish by Harry Boyle, The Yellow Briar by Patrick Slater, The Luck of Ginger Coffey by Brian Moore, and Lark in the Clean Air by Dennis Patrick Sears. I have added them to my reading list.”
The Canadian Genealogist issues can be downloaded from the OGS website.
The Ontario Genealogical Society publishes the OGS eWeekly Update every Saturday, and it is available by email to anyone who signs up — members and non-members. There is always a good selection of articles on the society and about genealogy resources and news in Canada and elsewhere. The registration form is located at the bottom of the home page.
