All-day ‘Tracing your Irish and Scots-Irish Ancestors’ with Ulster Historical Foundation in Ottawa

If you have ancestors who came from Ireland, whether they were Catholics, Protestants, Gaelic, Celtic, Ulster-Scots (Scots-Irish), or famine immigrants, you will want to attend the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa’s (BIFHSGO) special event in March.

On Saturday, March 10, BIFHSGO will welcome Fintan Mullan and Gillian Hunt from the Ulster Historical Foundation (UHF) — one of the leading heritage societies specializing in Irish genealogy — who will spend an entire day lecturing on Irish and Scots-Irish family research. This will be the UHF’s only Canadian stop on a 15-city North American tour.

Selling quickly
The fee for BIFHSGO members, who register through the Members Only section on the society’s website, is $20. The fee for non-members is $30.

A quick look at the sales numbers this morning shows the tickets are selling quickly for the Ottawa event.

Lectures
Running from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., this in-depth day of lectures will examine a multitude of historic records and online resources, and it will benefit beginners and seasoned genealogists.

These are the lectures:
• Introduction to Irish and Scots-Irish Family History Research
• Census substitutes and other important sources for the 18th and 19th centuries
• Using Land Records: Griffith’s Valuation, Tithe and Estate Records
• The Ulster Plantation and Sources for Finding 17th Century Families
• Worked Examples of Successful Irish Searches (Based on UHF Research Files)
• Q&A and Solving Brick Walls

Fintan Mullan has been executive director of the Ulster Historical Foundation since 2001. He pioneered online births, deaths and marriages in the counties of Antrim and Down, leading to a unique database containing over 20 million Irish historical records and making it the most useful online resource for Irish research. He has managed production of over 120 publications, including Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors.

Gillian Hunt is research officer with the UHF. She is responsible for the management of the UHF’s many genealogical activities and carries out research for clients. She has extensive experience in research at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (Belfast)
and the General Register Office (Dublin).
