In honour of the 100-year anniversary of the Halifax explosion, the Nova Scotia Archives has prepared an online exhibit showcasing some never before seen photos of the damage caused to buildings in the surrounding area.
The exhibit holds 123 photos of damaged buildings in and around the area devastated by the explosion caused when two ships collided in the harbor on December 6, 1917. About 2,000 people were killed by the blast, debris, fires or collapsed buildings, and an estimated 9,000 others were injured.
The photos of the damaged buildings were taken by W. G. MacLaughlan in January and February of 1918. Some locations have been identified based on notations on the images and/or the research work by archives staff, however, the majority remain unidentified.
