Library’s genealogy research guides list good suggestions of books and periodicals

The Toronto Public Library’s genealogy research guides about the resources they hold  are good reminders about the resources available in municipal, provincial, and university libraries.

The library began posting these guides online a couple of weeks ago.

The great thing about these guides is you don’t need to live in Toronto to benefit from the resources listed in those about military, Quebec, Jewish, and Huguenot genealogy research.

While all of the resources listed in the guides can certainly be found at the Toronto Public Library, I suspect many of the books, and even some of the periodicals, are available at libraries across Canada and, in the case of newly published books, you can probably find them at bookstores in person or online. For those out of print, used books can sometimes be found online on websites, such as Abebooks and eBay. A Google search of “used books” and “Canada,” or another location, will uncover other online sources.

Here are links to the guides:

Canadian Military Ancestors

Guide to Loiselle Card Index for Marriages in Quebec and Adjacent Areas
The Loiselle Index is a microfilm copy of a card index created by Père Antoine Loiselle.  It contains references to over one million marriage records, from 1642 to 1963, for 520 parishes in Quebec, six parishes in Madawaska County, New Brunswick and two parishes in Manchester, Hillsboro County, New Hampshire. Good description of the index, but no additional reading material provided.

Jewish Genealogy
The library’s collection includes general handbooks and guides for various countries, Canadian, British, European and Holocaust related material, and a “strong” map and atlas collection.

Huguenot Genealogy
Huguenots were Protestant refugees who fled from religious persecution in France and the Low Countries to Britain and North America in the 17th century.
