Ancestry adds Manitoba and Saskatchewan collections

Ancestry added the following collections this week.

Manitoba, Canada, Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1834-1959
Some of the records in this collection pre-date Manitoba’s creation as a province, and, as a result, are from locations that do not exist in present-day Manitoba, but instead are found in Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, or Minnesota. Most locations were fur trading posts. The earliest records are those created by Oblate missionaries to the First Nations and Métis populations in those remote areas which, at the time, belonged to the Hudson’s Bay Company until 1869.

Some information found by browsing the collection may date back to 1800, but baptism, marriage, and burial records are only found post-1834.

Many baptisms are transcribed with a first name only, so you should search by first name only if unsuccessful with a surname.

Manitoba, Canada, Census Indexes, 1832-1856 & 1870
This collection consists of census indexes from the Red River Settlement (Manitoba), from the years 1832-1856, taken by the Hudson’s Bay Company, and the 1870 provincial census of Manitoba.

Saskatchewan, Canada, Cemetery Transcripts, 1850-1994
These are transcriptions of headstones from various cemeteries, compiled by the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society. In several cases, a woman’s maiden name is included in the transcript.

A cemetery number is typed in the corner of each file card. This number, used in conjunction with a chart, provided in the description of the collection, can help determine which cemetery and municipality an individual was buried in. Using the chart, find the cemetery number that corresponds with the number located in the corner of the image. The value in the column to the left of this number is the municipality of burial, and the value to the right of the number is the name of the burial cemetery.

This collection has been available for free on FamilySearch since 2015.

Saskatchewan, Canada, Catholic Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1867-1932
Some registers are written in English or French and may have Latin headings.

Because of the location and time period of these records, some registers may include Métis families in the old Northwest Territories and in the province of Sakatchewan.

As with the Manitoba church records, a large number of the transcriptions of the Saskatchewan church records, especially baptisms, provide a first name only. In the case of baptisms, however, relatives names are often provided, so try including parents’ and godparents’ names in your searches.

Since 2016, FamilySearch has had a similar collection of Saskatchewan Catholic church records, from 1846 to 1957.
