Besides researching vital records and reading history books, another way to explore your Acadian roots is through food, and Halifax-based freelance journalist Simon Thibault has a recipe book that will help you do that.
In his new book, Pantry and Palate: Remembering and Rediscovering Acadian Food (Nimbus Publishing), Mr. Thibault explores his roots and explains the origin of the recipes in a series of essays.
The author told the National Post, “My mother gave me this series of notebooks, which were her mother’s, her grandmother’s and great aunt’s and a few other family connections; so turn-of-the-century, handwritten notebooks.
The book’s 50 recipes include tourtière, soups like chicken fricot with potato dumplings, breads, and desserts like puddings, custard pie, molasses cookies and cake, and donuts.
More about the recipe book is in the National Post article, Author of Acadian cookbook goes back to roots to find culinary heritage.
