The Irish in Lotbinière, Quebec

A couple of days ago, I shared a blog post, written in French, about the Irish in Lotbinière, Quebec and its Protestant churches on the Genealogy à la carte Facebook group.

There was a fair amount of interest in the post, particularly from Lynn whose great-great-great-grandfather James Orr built the Wesleyan Church along with his brother Robert.

Lotbinière County is located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, between Trois-Rivières and Quebec City.

According to the Google Translate version of the article, “The first Irish settled in Lotbinière around 1815. The Irish of Protestant faith settled mostly in St-Patrice de Beaurivage and St-Gilles while Catholics met in Sainte-Croix and Sainte-Agathe. As a result, several Protestant churches were erected quickly on the territory. Most of them no longer exist today.”

The blog post, Sur les traces des Irlandais au Québec – Lotbinière et ses églises protestantes, written by Sandra Lacroix, may be difficult for many of you to read, even with your high school French, so here is the Google Translate English version that is pretty good. One odd translation is Church Trinidad of England. It should be Trinity Anglican Church.
