Further to my blog post, Royal BC Museum offers new resource for genealogists, about the 1971 Pioneer Medallion applications that have been digitized and are searchable online, Kathy Jones, webmaster at the Qualicum Beach Family History Society, told me applications were also completed during Canada’s centenary in 1967.
You may recall the government of British Columbia launched the Pioneer Medallion project in 1971 to celebrate the centennial of BC’s entry into Confederation. BC residents who were either born or living in Canada before 1897 were encouraged to complete applications to receive what the government called Pioneer Medallions.
1967 applications
The Royal BC Museum has only digitized the 1971 applications. The 1967 applications are currently available on microfilm in Record Series GR 1489.
You can search an index of names of those who applied for the pioneer medallions in both 1967 and 1976 in the Vancouver Island area, covering Nanaimo and districts, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, and Port Alberni on the Qualicum Beach Family History Society’s (QBFHS) website.
Search the QBFHS’s index here for both 1967 and 1976 applications. You may be surprised to see people originally from other provinces, who moved to BC, filled in an application.
While you’re on the QBFHS website, take a look around at the other resources they offer, including the Genealogy Toolbox.
