If you’ve been thinking about subscribing to Ancestry or Findmypast, now may be the time to do so.
Ancestry
Until November 18, Ancestry is offering a 40 percent discount to new members. John D. Reid writes on his blog, Canada’s Anglo-Celtic Connections, “Ancestry.ca is offering a 12 month membership for the Canadian records for $72 and the World Deluxe for $180. That’s about as good as it gets.”
Findmypast
Until November 21, you can subscribe for a one-month world package at Findmypast for only $1. The regular monthly price is $19.95US. You can subscribe through the US .com version, which also includes Canada here. (Findmypast, please call this a North American collection.) After the first month, your subscription will continue at the regular rate. If you are not interested in automatically continuing, make sure you check off the box that prevents auto renewal.
Thanks for championing the meagre Canadian content on Find My Past and our separate and unique identity as Canadians. I used FMP almost exclusively for their excellent UK, Irish and Scottish records.
I don’t like what they have now become (Ancestry clone) and I have been very offended by them repeatedly. I have written to them about each offensive email I received. They sent me unsatisfactory responses.
When they put the USA flag next to our records and imbedded USA as the Country of at least Atlantic Canada records, I lost it with them.
Apparently others did as well and social media made them pay attention!
Thanks! A couple of Canadians have raked me over the coals for my comments about Canada in the “US Collection.” I guess making these suggested changes politely is having limited impact on FMP.
Do you mean that they were upset that you pointed out that Canada was incorrectly labelled?
There was no link to take advantage of the Ancestry.ca discount, but on a direct phone call to Ancestry and an explanation of where I found the information I was able to take advantage of the discounted price.
A couple of Canadian genealogists told me if I didn’t like how Canadian records were handled within the US, I should stop subscribing. This was after I wrote what I thought was a polite post about the use of the US flag to illustrate Canadian records and other issues. I also suggested FMP needs to form an advisory council with Canadian genealogists.
After seeing an ad for 40% off on Remembrance Day , I phoned ancestry.ca to double check that it was in Canadian funds. The young fellow that I spoke with told me that it was not available for Canadian subscribers. I will have to try again.
Seems odd. Keep us posted.
